VDOT will be seeking input from transportation stakeholders statewide on the draft content of the Virginia MUTCD
-
We all spend time driving around Northern Virginia and observing how vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians interact with each other.
-
VDOT is in the process of adopting the FHWA’s 11th edition of the MUTCD and developing a new comprehensive Virginia MUTCD (rather than a separate Supplement which has been adopted by VDOT in the past). As part of this adoption, VDOT will be seeking input from transportation stakeholders statewide on the draft content of the Virginia MUTCD.

VDOT is requesting stakeholders who would like to participate in this review effort (and associated webinars or trainings) to please provide your contact information at this link: https://projects.vhbapps.com/vdotmutcdreview/. Upload your comments by 5 PM on April 16, 2025 at 5:00 PM EST.

If you are not familiar with the FHWA produced Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD), please let Lewis Grimm (sully@fairfaxfederation.org) know and he can provide you with a link to the public website. Here is a presentation from the summer of 2024 outlining key elements of the 11th Edition of the MUTCD published in December 2023.

I-495 Southside Express Lanes Study
-
About the study (https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/projects/northern-virginia-district/i-495-southside-express-lanes-study/)
-
VDOT, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and other federal, state and local agencies in Virginia and Maryland, is conducting an environmental study to potentially extend the express lanes system on the southern section of I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway), by approximately 11 miles from the Springfield Interchange (I-95/I-395/I-495) in Fairfax County, Virginia, across the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge, to the MD 210 interchange in Prince George’s County, Maryland. This location was identified in Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board’s adopted I-95 Corridor Improvement Plan as an area for additional study.

Public Information Meetings - April 2025
-
VDOT will provide information at upcoming public meetings on the three alternatives under study to address identified transportation needs within the study area. These needs include extending and providing continuity of the express lanes system on I-495, providing additional travel choices, reducing congestion and improving travel reliability, improving safety, and providing consistency with local and regional plans. VDOT will also provide preliminary traffic analysis data and updates on study progress and ongoing coordination.

Braddock Road S-Curve Realignment and Intersection Improvements at Old Lee Rd
-
Community Meeting 7PM 9 April at Westfield High School
-
This project will:
-
Construct the S-curve portion of Braddock Road (Route 620), located between Pleasant Valley Road and Old Lee Road, on a new, straighter alignment.
-
Build a new traffic signal at the Braddock Road and Old Lee Road intersection.
-
Construct a “jughandle” lane for turns from eastbound Braddock Road to Old Lee Road (a “jughandle” is an at-grade ramp allowing drivers to make indirect left turns and/or U-turns).
-
Add a right-turn lane from Old Lee Road to westbound Braddock Road.
-
-
These were the recommended alternatives in the final report of a study that assessed potential safety and operational improvements at the Old Lee Road intersection and S-curve. The concepts studied included realignment of the S-curve and intersection enhancements at Braddock Road and Old Lee Road such as turn lanes and innovative intersection improvements. The final report was published in April 2021; the final report's appendices are listed below under "Other relevant links".
-
The intersection and S-curve experience morning and evening peak period congestion and crashes. The S-curve can sometimes cause issues for vehicles navigating sharp turns along this stretch of road.
